iPhone 4 light sensor

hi, I am not an iPhone person. I'm an Android person. I just got my wife a used AT&T iPhone. When she talks on it, the screen doesn't "go dark" and she keeps "beeping" stuff with her face. Her Verizon iPhone did go dark when she put it to her face to talk. Is this a defect in the hardware? Or...
