After last year brought a number of scientific breakthroughs (http://www.businessinsider.com/top-30-science-stories-of-2015-so-far-2015-7), 2016 is already shaping up to be another great year for science.

It all starts on Jan. 17, when the Comet Catalina will reach its closest point to Earth -- roughly 68 million miles away (http://earthsky.org/space/comet-catalina-c2013-us10-november-december-january-2015-2016) -- and will even be visible to the naked eye (http://www.news-press.com/story/life/outdoors/2016/01/06/swfl-skies-preston-catalina-comet-january-calusa-nature-center-planetarium/78327658/).

Then, in March, astronauts Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko will return from the longest continuous stay on board (http://www.planetary.org/blogs/jason-davis/2015/20151230-iss-2016-preview.html) the International Space Station. NASA scientists (http://www.smithsonianmag.com/science-nature/eye-mars-nasa-putting-its-astronaut-twins-work-180953358/?no-ist) plan to test how space flight affects the human body and compare Kelly's body to that of his genetically identical twin (http://www.techly.com.au/2015/12/26/space-time-slower-body-ages-far-rapidly/) brother.

Near the end of the year, the Sierra Nevada Corporation is scheduled to launch the privately funded Dream Chaser (http://www.space.com/19552-dream-chaser.html) in November. The spacecraft (http://www.sncspace.com/ProductLines/SpaceExplorationSystems) will be launched on the back of a rocket into suborbital space before coming back to Earth and landing horizontally on a runway.
