CALGARY — No one was injured when a three-alarm fire engulfed a duplex under construction in Bridgeland.

Around 9:20 p.m. Wednesday night, firefighters were dispatched to the 100 block of 6A Street N.E., kitty-corner from the Langevin Community School.

They immediately encountered a large volume of flames and smoking coming through the roof of the multi-level residence, said battalion chief Ernie Molineaux.

A second and eventually a third alarm were called in. Firefighters doused the duplex with loads of water. Soon the fire was under control, and by 10:20 p.m., firefighters were left to battling hot spots.

The house to the south side sustained exterior damage from the heat, but no one was living in the place.

The people living on the north side got out of the house uninjured, and Molineaux doesn’t expect much damage to that residence.

“We managed to get some heavy water to protect the exposure,” he said. “We have at this point kept the fire from entering the secondary structures.”

The third alarm, Molineaux said, was a precaution more than anything.

“We haven’t engaged all the crews from the third alarm, we likely won’t but they are here as a precaution in case it got away from us. At this point, it doesn’t look like it will.”

The origin of the fire is not yet known, and investigators are on scene to determine the cause.
