Default Am I actually required to repair the backflow preventer.

Don’t know how, but from today morning when I set my washing machine ON for the week’s washing chore, as the water started filling the tub, some yucky smell was there and the colour of the water was also changed. For the last 2 days we had a disturbance with the water supply. Sometimes it has a gush flow and sometimes the flow is straining.
Heard that the sudden pressure change in water pipeline systems can lead to backflow, disturbing the whole plumbing system. But then again, that is why we have backflow preventer installed in our home. But would this pressure change cause damage to the preventer. Should I be calling my plumber from Calgary town to do the backflow preventer repair so that plumbing system of my home is working safe. Please help me on this. I would like all my systems working back in steady order soon before the toughness of this season starts.
