AppleCare Plus and water damage?

I'm thinking of purchasing AppleCare Plus for an iPhone and was wondering whether the insurance extends to water damage or whether it covers accidental damage excluding damage due to liquids. Please advise. The sources I've checked haven't been very clear on this point.
