iPhone 2G vs 3G?

So, Is the difference between 2G & 3G is simply its connection speed? or is there something else. IE: cell service? Is there still 2g service or is 3g taking it over? the thing is i have a 2g Iphone and wanted to know if i will have service as if i had a 3g phone. I dont care about faster...
