As high-level negotiations swirled around the fate of the human rights advocate Chen Guangcheng, several members of his inner circle of "barefoot lawyers" were picked up by the authorities. The lawyer Jiang Tianyong, for example, says he was detained --- and beaten so badly that he lost the hearing in one ear.
