Using LED flash as a message notification light?

Question for iPhone users as I don't have one around to tinker with right now but I'm trying to figure out how to set something up for a relative and a coworker. I found out that you can set up an iPhone so that it uses the phone's flash to blink rapidly twice when you miss a text, etc....
