how to tell if iPhone 4S is factory unlocked?

did a search..came up with nothing. i'm sure this topic has been beaten to death before but... I'm looking at buying a brand new iphone 4s. Seller said it's factory unlocked. How can you tell? Other than inserting my telus microsim from my iphone 4 and another carrier's microsim?
