Using SMS short codes for free?

I have a prepaid phone sim in an iPhone 4 and I can't send SMS to short codes to participate in loyalty programs. Does anyone know of a free way to interact with SMS short codes? Maybe through an app? Or some kind of SMS forwarding? Thanks for your help!
