using unlocked iphone 4S in Canada

I have an unlocked iphone 4s and I use Ptel prepaid service. I will be traveling to Canada in July and would like be able to text or call my canadian friends, as well as contact family here in USA. Ptel (platinum tel) says they don't offer service in Canada. Can I purchase a Canadian SIM card...
