Remotely Wiping/Bricking Stolen iPhone

Last month my wife's locked 5s was stolen. We immediately called AT&T and they said whoever had the phone turned it off. AT&T also told my wife that instantly, after turning on the phone, the network would see it and immediately wipe it. Is this true? Also, will the phone's memory simply be...
