Will iphone 4S run Google maps/nav OK?

I need a phone with a very good camera for a project I landed. I'm on a budget and don't want a contract, so thinking a used/refurbished iphone 4S has a decent camera. If I go with 4S, does it run Google maps ok? I've done a bit of reading and don't see much of a improvement by going up the ladder...
