Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) has been indicted by a grand jury, multiple  (http://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/Texas-Attorney-General-Ken-Paxton-Indicted-Sources-Say-320384181.html?_osource=SocialFlowTwt_DFWBrand)out lets (http://www.wfaa.com/story/news/local/texas-news/2015/08/01/attorney-general-ken-paxton-to-be-indicted-monday/30989247/) reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/02/us/grand-jury-indicts-texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-on-felony-charges.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&modul e=second-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news) on Saturday.

The indictments were handed down on Tuesday and will be unsealed Monday. Paxton faces three felony charges: two counts of first-degree securities fraud and a third-degree charge of failing to register with the state securities board, The New York Times reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/02/us/grand-jury-indicts-texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-on-felony-charges.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&modul e=second-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news).

Paxton's office did not immediately return a request for comment.

Paxton is accused of misleading and encouraging investors to put over $600,000 in a technology company without disclosing that he received a fee on their investment and while serving in the Texas House of Representatives, The New York Times reported (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/08/02/us/grand-jury-indicts-texas-attorney-general-ken-paxton-on-felony-charges.html?hp&action=click&pgtype=Homepage&modul e=second-column-region&region=top-news&WT.nav=top-news).

Paxton also had a similar arrangement with a financial management firm that was accused of “unethical and fraudulent conduct,” The Dallas Morning News reported in May (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/politics/headlines/20150516-new-details-revealed-on-ken-paxtons-securities-referral-deal.ece). Last year, Paxton admitted to the Texas State Securities Board that he improperly did not register as an investment adviser when referring clients, and paid a $1,000 fine.

But failing to register with the board can also be prosecuted as a criminal charge. After Paxton paid the fine, a watchdog group then filed a complaint asking that Paxton face criminal charges, which eventually led to an investigation by the Texas Rangers. A special prosecutor appointed in the case told WFAA in May (http://www.wfaa.com/story/news/local/texas-news/2015/08/01/attorney-general-ken-paxton-to-be-indicted-monday/30989247/) that the investigation had led to new evidence.

Paxton has sued the Obama administration multiple times on issues such as immigration (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=2015/01/26/states-lawsuit-immigration_n_6550840.html), the environment (https://www.texastribune.org/2015/07/08/texas-suing-epa-again/)and benefits for same-sex couples (https://www.texastribune.org/2015/03/18/ag-paxton-sues-feds-over-benefits-same-sex-couples/).

Paxton can surrender and get booked at any of the state's county jails, according to WFAA (http://www.wfaa.com/story/news/local/texas-news/2015/08/01/attorney-general-ken-paxton-to-be-indicted-monday/30989247/). He does not have to leave office while facing trial.
