There have been conflicting theories about why Donald Trump has proven to have such appeal to the Republican Party electorate. Most center on the notion that he has captured the zeitgeist of today's political world -- namely the anger and resentment that many voters feel against "politicians." But Trump's attraction may simply be that he is what he is -- and that is open for everybody to see. He combines a unique ability to promise great hope -- "I will make America great again," with an utter, unabashed projection of self-confidence -- "I can do it accomplish what nobody else can," -- and fearlessness -- which allows him to casually swat away all the other Republican candidates.
The Trump approach is the kind of enchantment which stirs people's souls in times of chaos and despair. It connects to an almost religious desire to latch onto a leader who will help frightened people climb out of despondency and enter into a world of complete security. Trump's certainty of conviction, whether real or not, in times of great upheaval, is compelling. People will overlook narcissism and self-regard because they are so intent on grabbing onto a belief system -- his stated desire to rebuild the country, unsoiled by any compromise, corruption or political expediency.
There is an element of a cult in all of this. But Trump's success as a businessman -- despite the fact, little noted, that he inherited his fortune from his father -- lends credibility to his leadership. The fact that he can declare shamelessly: "I am a very rich man, very rich," talk endlessly about all the buildings he has constructed and emblazoned with his name, promote casinos he's founded, spin tales about his deals and cite his book, The Art of the Deal, speak about his successful TV show The Apprentice, boast about all the TV networks that still want his brand, contribute to a sense that he has destiny on his side.
Some critics maintain that he gets away with making promises without showing any specifics to voters. But in fact, he has spoken publicly in detail about what he intends to do, including building a great wall along the Mexican border, making the Mexican government pay for it, getting rid of ISIS by bombing the oil fields which the jihadists control, create jobs by undertaking more construction projects, etc. He may duck many other issues, but he lays out enough substance to seem real -- even if the goals are unlikely to ever be realized.
Indeed, his sweeping pledges and declarations are the key -- backed up by the notion that he has gotten things done in the past, which none of the other candidates have. He comes over as a dominating take-charge guy who can ram through bureaucratic obstacles as well as sweet-talk adversaries into capitulation. In today's wayward era, many Republicans fall for the pitch.
