Are carrier models different than the Apple Store versions?

I was thinking of taking advantage of T-Mobile's current iPhone promo. Other than presumably being locked, is there any hardware or software difference between what T-Mobile will give me and what I'd get at the Apple Store? Also, does the Apple Store service carrier models or would I have to go to...
