In this video, Eckhart Tolle explains that when you relate to others from the level of form, the ego goes into comparison mode by evaluating your physical appearance, wealth, education, knowledge, and power, in relation to the other person. You either feel superior or inferior, depending on the ego's assessment, and this informs how you relate to the other person. If we can sense our essential being, the deeper dimension within, we can relate to people on the deeper level of being-- from a place of equanimity and love.
