View Full Version : Blood in the Polls: Trump Isn't the First Republican to Alienate Women

As the blood continued to flow out of Megyn Kelly's "wherever," Donald Trump was still sitting comfortably on top of the GOP primary polls. Kelly's rightfully assertive tone seemed to not only upset "The Donald" but also riled up part of the conservative base against her and Fox News (https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/the-fix/wp/2015/08/07/conservatives-are-mad-at-fox-news-and-megyn-kelly-they-shouldnt-be/?tid=hybrid_content_1_na). While Trump's supporter base likely represents a relatively small part of the GOP base, this incident is only adding to the GOP's alienation of women (http://www.wmur.com/politics/clinton-calls-trump-offensive-but-calls-other-gop-candidates-just-as-troubling-on-womens-health-issues/34643066).

Governor George Pataki called for defunding Planned Parenthood on the basis that it shows a "hideous disrespect for life" and Governor Bobby Jindal furthered that attitude by promising to investigate the organization with "the Department of Justice and the IRS and everybody else that we can send from the federal government." (http://dailycaller.com/2015/08/06/jindal-doj-irs-planned-parenthood-debate/)What Jindal and Pataki fail to say is that only 3% per cent of Planned Parenthood's services are abortion services, and 34 per cent are contraceptive services. (http://plannedparenthood.org/files/9313/9611/7194/Planned_Parenthood_By_The_Numbers.pdf) This means that over half of what Planned Parenthood does is centered around health and education services.

Governor Huckabee, who called for Trump to apologize for his comments, has made his own significant contributions to the onslaught of anti-female rhetoric. In 2014, Huckabee said that Obamacare is making women believe that "they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control because they cannot control their libido." (https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/compost/wp/2014/01/23/mike-huckabee-and-womens-uncontrolled-libido-or-uncle-sugar/) Huckabee seems to be ignorant of the various other uses of birth control besides contraception. Perhaps, Huckabee is unaware of the Uncle Sugar who responds to all the women who use birth control to regulate their menstruation cycles or simply want lighter and less painful periods (http://www.webmd.com/sex/birth-control/features/other-reasons-to-take-the-pill). Perhaps, Huckabee was simply recalling the time he endorsed the Southern Baptist Convention's stance that "women should submit graciously" (http://articles.latimes.com/1998/jun/10/news/mn-58510) to their husbands.

Jeb Bush has raised his own concerns with a reluctance to spend (http://www.nytimes.com/politics/first-draft/2015/08/04/jeb-bush-suggests-womens-health-issues-are-overfunded/) "half a billion dollars on women's health issues." Carly Fiorina has said that she's willing to shut down the government (http://www.lifenews.com/2015/08/10/carly-fiorina-i-would-shut-down-the-government-to-de-fund-planned-parenthood/)to de-fund Planned Parenthood and while she has acknowledged a gender wage gap, she is against passing legislation (http://thinkprogress.org/election/2015/05/04/3653695/no-carly-fiorinas-candidacy-doesnt-negate-war-women/) to help combat the gap and instead places the blame on unions and government bureaucracies.

Female supporters of the GOP should have "blood coming out of their eyes and their wherever." Their blood should boil at the thought of having to fight for their bodies and freedom against potential presidents. Mitt Romney lost the female vote by a double-digit margin, for a multitude of reasons ranging from "binders full of women (http://www.cnn.com/2012/10/17/opinion/cardona-binders-women/)" to vowing to de-fund Planned Parenthood (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=2012/03/13/mitt-romney-planned-parenthood_n_1343450.html). If the party continues on their current path of disrespecting women and prioritizing uterus control over gun control, then Trump is not the beginning or the end of the problem, he's just the loudest voice drowning out a sea of those who will likely enact similar policies. -- This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms.
