Anxiety affects us all in different ways. For ABC news Anchor Dan Harris, secretly living with anxiety finally took its toll the form of a severe panic attack - on live TV (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=2014/03/13/dan-harris-panic-attack-on-air_n_4958884.html). We were thrilled to have Dan come by and share his story, but even more thrilled to learn from him what we can do about our own issues with panic and anxiety.
When did you know medication was the answer?
After his panic attack, Dan found an unexpected solution to his issues - meditation. A skeptic of the habit initially, Dan tried it out for a "couple of weeks", and found that the benefits came much quicker than he expected. While there's no magic number for how long it takes, Dan noticed improvements in his ability to stay on task, which, in his line of work, was a "huge" plus.
A "bicep pull for your brain"
Contrary to popular belief, meditation is not about "clearing your mind" - it's more about "focusing it, for nanoseconds at a time." By concentrating on the breath, occasionally losing focus, and then refocusing, the act of mediation becomes more of a "bicep pull for your brain"
