The Seattle Education Association reached a tentative agreement with district bargainers early Tuesday morning to settle a strike that began last week and delayed the start of the school year for over 50,000 students.
A statement from the Seattle Education Association, posted to its Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/SeattleEA?fref=nf), indicates that the strike will continue until the agreement is finalized:
The Seattle Education Association has reached a tentative contract agreement with the Seattle School Board, but the strike will continue until the SEA board and representative assembly review the agreement later today and decide whether to recommend approval to the SEA membership or continue striking.
SEA members should report to their picket locations today beginning at 8:30 am. SEA picket captains will provide more information to SEA members regarding next steps.
Tuesday is the fifth day of the strike.
The association, which represents about 5,000 teachers (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=entry/seattle-teacher-strike-brings-out-concerned-parents_55f05a2be4b002d5c077859b) and staff members, is asking for pay increases to match the increased cost of living in the city, guaranteed student recess time and fairer evaluations.
