With a visit to Mexico (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=entry/pope-francis-will-visit-mexico_56141692e4b0368a1a6155fe) right around the corner, Pope Francis had a simple question for a Mexican monsignor he encountered (http://latino.foxnews.com/latino/lifestyle/2016/01/05/pope-asks-mexican-tourist-in-rome-to-get-tequila-ready-for-his-february-visit/) in the Vatican's St. Peter's Square on New Year's Day:
Are the Mexican people planning to greet him with tequila?
During the short exchange, which was captured on video (https://www.facebook.com/padrecarlos/videos/vb.633911094/10153905843486095/?type=2&theater) and posted to social media, the enthusiastic Mexican priest, Carlos Alberto Cardona (https://www.facebook.com/padrecarlos), greets the pope by yelling, "Pope! We are waiting for you in Mexico! (https://www.rt.com/news/327943-pope-francis-tequila-mexico/) ... You are welcome in February, in Mexico!"
"With tequila or without tequila?" the pontiff replies with a smile.
"With a lot of tequila!" Cardona reassures Pope Francis, before asking him for his blessing.
Just in case the Argentinian pope hadn't already won your heart:
While Pope Francis favors "austere" meals, he has been known to enjoy a glass of wine on occasion (http://www.bonappetit.com/trends/article/what-pope-francis-likes-to-eat-and-drink), according to Bon Appétit. Not surprising when you consider tiny Vatican City consumes more wine per person (http://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/shortcuts/2014/feb/25/why-does-the-vatican-drink-so-much-wine) -- an average 98 bottles per year -- than any other country.
As "the people's pope (http://poy.time.com/2013/12/11/person-of-the-year-pope-francis-the-peoples-pope/)," it seems only polite that the Holy Father would partake in Mexico's national drink during his visit.
