I wish I could say I completed everything I set out to do in 2015. One of the things we tend to do when we don't feel as far along as we should is be too hard on ourselves. I extended grace to myself and followed my own advice for not finishing what I started. I knew being frustrated would not make me any more productive or closer to the target.

So how exactly do you finish what you've started? It would be easy to say Nike's motto - "Just Do It!" But if it were really that easy it would be done already, right? Obviously, there are some barriers getting in the way.

Here are 3 things to help you finish what you've started:

Identify What's Getting in Your Way

If you find yourself frustrated for not completing something you started, the first step is identify the root of the issue and not move full speed ahead. Is it mindset? Organization? Systems? The right support? Motivation? Fear? Or all of the above? Whatever it is, you will only perpetuate a repetitive cycle if you don't deal with what caused it in the first place.

Learn to Make the Big Things Small

Our goals can sometimes feel daunting causing questions like, "How do I do it?", "Where do I start?", and more. In addition to the excitement and inspiration we often times feel, we can often feel a weight at times. And if we aren't careful, that weight, uncertainty, and frustrating can turn into procrastination. Causing us a delay in progress for a few week, a few months, or sometimes even years.

But guess what? Every big thing starts with a small thing. If you are thinking about writing a book it starts with putting a word on a piece of paper. It starts with writing the first sentence. Maybe you don't know the entire process of publishing but you do know the concepts in your thinking that you can begin to outline and research.

Every new revenue goals starts with your next client. Your new career goal starts with your next career conversation. Planning is great and is a must. However, one way to manage expectations of yourself and the goals at hand is to own what you can do and accomplish today, not tomorrow.

Keep the Vision or Goal in Front of You

This is one you have to be careful with because it can seem a little cliche when you think about it. We have all written goals, kept them in a journal, online, or evernote, or even a vision board. And sometimes, we have even discarded them. What I mean by keeping the vision or goal in front of you is to keep them active. Yes, physically keep them in front of you where you can see them - daily. But most importantly, figure out a way you plan to bring them to life. Who will you talk with them about? How often? How will you celebrate milestones, etc. Create a follow-through system that works for you.

As a visionary with tons of creative ideas, I can easily spin myself into a whirlwind. But one of the things that has helped me be successful in leading large scale change, coaching clients, or staying focused in business, is learning how to make all things practical. No matter the scale of the challenge, breaking it up into small manageable steps have allowed me to be the most successful.

Your goals are not too big. In fact, they may even be too small. But before I stretch in your vision, identify what's the most important thing you can do today.

Courageous Life Questions:

What goal(s) you would like to make progress on?

What are the barriers getting in your way?

What solutions or systems can you put in place to increase momentum?

How do you plan to keep your vision active and in front of you?
