Terrific Articles
There have been a slew of articles on Huff/Post50 lately about boomers and aging. Remaining sexual, single after a death or divorce, dating, and other topics relating to boomer aging. I appreciate the tone and tenor of these articles because they encourage boomers to remain conscious about aging well. The nude photos of older women are stunningly beautiful, and the stories of boomer men and women overcoming diversity are inspirational.

Luck
I'm sharing my aging journey in the hope that it might encourage other older boomers. I just began a new career as a voiceover actor at 70, something I inadvertently stumbled onto after receiving a spam email. When I took voiceover classes what became clear was that having a virtual library filled with life experiences was helpful regarding the acting aspect of voice work. While voiceover is mostly a solo path, becoming a writer at 60 had already made me comfortable working alone. I recorded my first voiceover piece yesterday. It was exciting to read the script with the appropriate emotional range, and it was the first of many I plan to record in a career I expect to last as long as I do. There's an expression in the industry, "no one retires," which makes perfect sense.

Reinvention Revitalizes
This isn't the first time I've reinvented myself. I was a businessman until 60, when I decided to become a writer. I wrote a few books and hundreds of articles. The articles led to date coaching, another new career path I've followed in my spare time. I'd dated for quite a while and found my partner online, I've received thousands of helpful, useful comments on my articles from Huff/Post 50 readers, and I'd worked on my issues in a men's group, which helped me develop my EQ.

My date coaching clients are boomer women, which isn't surprising. Statistically they're at a distinct disadvantage in the online dating world. Note to men who date online: If you don't fill out your online dating profile in detail you're a mystery to women, and the best will pass you. Share who you are and why a cool woman should seriously consider you. It's a win/win.

Don't Sit
I want to encourage aging boomers to pursue new avenues that can spark passions and maybe even provide some ego strokes. It's easy to grow stale. Just sit at home all day and watch television. We all know people that seem more like they're waiting to die than living life fully.

We've Got It
Here's what I know with certainty. Boomers have the requisite skills to accomplish nearly any goals. Okay, probably not brain surgery, but our vast life experiences translate into new career possibilities and/or volunteering. There isn't any better feeling than helping people in need.

Grandma Moses began painting at 78. Colonel Sanders was 65 before he sold a drumstick. Laura Ingalls Wilder wrote the Little House on The Prairie at 65. The list goes on, but the point is that it's never too late to follow your dreams. The only obstacle standing in your way is you.

Don't Speed Up Dying
Being sedentary is a fast track to early death, so get to the gym and take long walks to keep your body healthy. And eat right, which means eschewing fast food joints that damage your body. If you don't want your golden years to turn into lead then take responsibility for your health and wellbeing. I wanted to be a writer in college, but the birth of my son caused me to follow the money instead. Becoming a writer four decades later satisfied an unfulfilled dream. While the notion of voiceover acting never occurred to me until I got that spam email, sometimes finding a new path just takes a little luck.

Find Your Luck
But you'll have to keep your eyes open even if you hope to be lucky, and you'll have to keep your mind open to the infinite number of possibilities as well. Whatever vegetable you think older boomers turn into, remember that becoming one isn't mandatory. Just close your eyes and imagine accomplishing something you've always fantasized about. Now open your eyes and do it. If you go at it with a vengeance you'll likely succeed.
Who's old? People who think they're old, that's who.
