NATIONAL HARBOR, Md. -- Retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson formally announced he was suspending his presidential campaign during a speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday.
Carson all but ended his campaign earlier this week when he released a statement saying he didn't see a "path forward" (https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/ben-carson-to-tell-supporters-he-sees-no-path-forward-for-campaign/2016/03/02/d6bef352-d9b3-11e5-891a-4ed04f4213e8_story.html) after a poor showing in all of the GOP's nominating contests so far. Carson announced that he would serve the national chair of My Faith Votes, a group that encourages Christians to vote (http://www.cnn.com/2016/03/04/politics/ben-carson-new-role-my-faith-votes-cpac/index.html).
"I am leaving the campaign trail," Carson said. "Even though I am leaving the campaign trail... I will still be heavily involved."
The announcement was met with a loud round of applause and shouts from a few disappointed supporters.
