"Tell me Risto, do you think you can have your cake and eat it too?"
I froze and gazed over the table to my new girlfriend's dad. We were having our first dinner together and my palms were sweating. The assessing of the possible future son-in-law was full on. His question nagged at me for some time until we had broken-up and parted ways. One year later I was listening to a poet in a restaurant. My ex-girlfriend's dad's conundrum returned to me at the speed of light when the poet stated the perfect answer to that question:
"Only shared cake is whole cake"
Disruption is a fading Silicon Valley buzzword. A new market disruption introduces a product or service that previously couldn't be served. Disruptive business models provides simpler, cheaper or more convenient alternatives to existing products. It may eventually affect an existing market and value network and create a change in consumer behaviour.
Our personal values and behaviour are under a constant change. Small and powerful disruptions in our inner space shape our future decisions. The behavioural-changing disruption of the mind may be hiding in surprising encounters.
One time in India on a warm pitch-black night, I drove down an unlit dirt road on a scooter bike. Suddenly, a 10-year-old girl appeared in the darkness in front of me. I slammed on the brakes, almost flipping over the handlebars. She stood still and stared at me with her big wide open eyes. Then to my surprise, she climbed on the bike and squeezed me with her skinny arms. After a silent fifteen-minute-long ride, she gently tapped on my shoulder, indicating to stop. Before disappearing into the thick jungle, she turned and thanked me with a shy smile. That journey of trust changed something inside me. Disruptive innovations tend to be produced by outsiders.
Once I failed as a leader. My mentor suggested I write a list of things where I had been unsuccessful. The exercise felt so radical that I decided to share my findings with my team. The presentation was received with mixed feelings. Later, one of the chiefs approached me and thanked me for sharing my findings. She thought my openness had been brave. I think we both were disrupted a bit for the better in that very moment.
We vibrate differently with different people. The gravity of safeness is protecting us from disruptions and our fears cause us to seek out a homogenous group. Yet when you tell a story about yourself, you often refer to the moments where an idle life was disrupted.
Are you exposed to a disruptive ideas, people and circumstances? Do you spend time in an environment actively seeking brave changes for the better?
Do you disrupt yourself enough?
