It's easy to see how others limit themselves. You know how good they are, but yet they don't ask for what they want or make a move. Sometimes their words frustrate you.
• I'm ready for a new relationship, but maybe I'm just as well off on my own.
• I want to play an important role at work, but if I mention it they'll probably laugh.
• I long to own and run a business, but I can't afford the financial risk to my family.
What's harder to realize is that we're one of them -- often holding ourselves back in the same way. In my last article (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=jinny-ditzler/why-youre-sapping-your-co_b_9403538.html) I talked about a shift that can put this costly issue behind you. Whether you're 28 or 68, it's never too late to move from Life Pursuit I to Life Pursuit II.

Change your tune from "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows (http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/judygarland/imalwayschasingrainbows.html)" to "Somewhere Over the Rainbow (http://www.reelclassics.com/Musicals/Wizoz/rainbow-lyrics.htm)" -- my lifetime favorite. It's time to kick the Awe, Shucks Kid out to pasture and stop hiding your light under a bushel basket. Yes, we're embarrassed by our greatness, but there comes a moment to own up to who we are and get on with it. I invite you to make this that moment.
Here are my three top reasons for coming out of the ''not good enough" closet:
1. You matter. And you know it, so be true to yourself. Recently I listened to a bright and beautiful young woman share her history of letting boyfriends take advantage of her. She felt she didn't deserve any better, but she wanted to start sticking up for herself. When I asked her why, she paused for a moment and then said because I matter.
2. You're not getting any younger. Don't take it personally -- who is? But it's so easy to let the days slide by without making true progress. Our youngest niece is an inspiration because she never lost sight of her vision to have a meaningful human relations job. Yet the moment she graduated, the recession hit and the only jobs she found were miles from this dream. But today she's a career development counsellor and responsible for the entire university's on-campus recruitment program -- exactly the role she longed for.
3. We need you. Yes, it's a wonderful world but also full of suffering, poverty, and plenty of people who need our help. As Pope Francis (http://goo.gl/0Ecrao) asked, "how do you want to live? As a lamp that is lit, or one that is off?" And as the Dalai Lama (http://goo.gl/WrACJu) said last summer, "we need to find a new approach to bringing about inner peace. I believe that way is to be a force for good in the world." Perhaps that book you've been longing to write is exactly what people need right now.
Please make the best of your gifts by moving on from Life Pursuit I - it's a comfort zone you must leave in order to be the person you're meant to be.
What motivates most of us far more than material success
or recognition is our desire to be true to ourselves and live our lives
in ways that demonstrate our personal values and beliefs.
