Tesla Motors on Monday recalled (http://www.wsj.com/articles/tesla-recalls-model-x-suvs-for-problem-with-third-row-seat-1460396857) 2,700 of its new Model X SUVs to fix a latch it said may allow the third row of seats to snap forward during collisions.
The automaker said it knows of no accidents (http://www.thestreet.com/video/13526168/closing-bell-tesla-recalls-2-700-model-x-vehicles-u-s-stocks-slip.html) where the latch malfunctioned, but tests showed the possibility of failure. Until repairs are made, the company asked drivers to avoid carrying passengers in the third row (http://www.cnbc.com/2016/04/11/tesla-recalls-2700-model-x-cars.html).
The all-electric, falcon-winged Model X, which costs $81,200 (http://www.caranddriver.com/tesla/model-x), is Tesla's latest vehicle. It debuted last fall after delays (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/7eade576-6747-11e5-a57f-21b88f7d973f.html). At the time, CEO Elon Musk proclaimed it "the safest SUV ever. (http://start.westnet.ca/newstempch.php?article=entry/tesla-model-x-electric-suv_us_560abe2fe4b0af3706ddfe60)"
The recall is the first for the Model X. Futuris supplies seat backs to Tesla and will cover the cost of replacing the defective parts (http://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2016-04-11/tesla-issues-recall-of-2-700-model-x-suvs-to-fix-third-row-seats), according to Tesla.
The automaker discovered the fault before its planned launch of the Model X in Europe, The Wall Street Journal (http://www.wsj.com/articles/tesla-recalls-model-x-suvs-for-problem-with-third-row-seat-1460396857)reported.
Seating was an obstacle in getting the Model X to market, but it was the second row that posed a design problem (http://www.businessinsider.com/this-is-why-teslas-sculptural-work-of-art-back-seat-in-the-model-x-is-so-tricky-2015-8), according to Musk.
Tesla's delivery of SUVs has been behind schedule, which Musk last week blamed on a parts shortage (http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/tesla-explains-model-production-delays-ahead-meeting-model/story?id=38163468).
