Apps running in "letterbox" ?

Please correct me if I'm wrong... but isn't it true that many of the apps designed for iPhones previous to the 5 will not really take advantage of the larger screen? Is this going to be a severe problem as Apple tries to release phones with larger screens? What's the use of having a larger screen...
