Receiving conflicting information on AppleCare from Apple reps, need clarification

Just bought an iPhone 7 and received conflicting information on AppleCare - phone rep told me it can be purchased over the phone within 60 days of iPhone purchase and begins the day AppleCare was purchased (not the phone); store rep said it had to be checked out at a store in person if not buying...
