iPad third gen lost telephone icon. How do I make calls?

So, my bud gives me a third gen iPhone with 16 gig. It was a Verizon unit. Used it without a chip for the longest, and noticed the telephone call icon disappeared. When he first gave it to me I inserted my AT&T chip from my cell and made a few calls and it worked fine I now have it working...
