Apple pay?

I used Apple Pay today for the first time. I still had to sign my name or input a pin. This was Shaws supermarket. Cashier said it was because it's over $50. Is this normal. I thought my finger print scan was enough. The charge seems normal on my bank and states purchase Mobile.
