remote viewing of security cameras

I have decided to install some security cameras around the exterior of my home. I wish to be able to view the camera views remotely,(on my laptop) when I am away from my home. I will have no problem with the wiring etc. It is how to get them connected to the internet via a dvr that I don't understand. From what little I do understand, I cannot use the router supplied by Telus a VSG 1432. What do I need to do(need) to accomplish my project, a new router, a different provider, do i become my own internet ?? I don't mind paying a local technician to set it up for me, I just need to know it is possible to do and a general idea of the procedure. I do not wish to pay an alarm service for monitoring either. I am not a computer language person, but do not mind if you tell me in a language that is, as anybody who would be assisting me at my home would be knowledgeable.
