iPhone Speaker question

What should I do to make sure my iPhone speaker stays in optimal condition? If there is any distortion does that mean there is damage being done to the speaker? If the speaker was damaged would it be obvious or subtle? Will temporary "blasts" from music coming on too loud or microphone feedback...
