Tips And Resources For Overcoming Eating Disorders

Eating correctly is hard for all of us, but for some, the struggle is deadly. Severe over-eating or under-eating may lead to an eating disorder, a disease many of us have experience with, even if it is rarely diagnosed. We were so grateful to have Dr. Allegra Broft, a psychiatrist and professor at Columbia, on the show to educate us on the various types of eating disorders, and to let us know what we can do if a loved one needs help.

Additional Resources

In addition to all the great info Allegra gave us in the interview, she mentioned two great resources we can check up on for more help on dealing with this serious issue.
  • Overcoming Binge Eating by Christopher Fairburn
This book provides a detailed account of chronic binge-eating, and also includes a self-help program based upon the successful cognitive behavioral therapy developed by the author.

  • The Feed BlogAnother resource, run by the Columbia Center for Eating Disorders, is The Feed Blog, an up to date resource about healthy eating and eating disorder prevention. A recent post features advice on how to maintain healthy eating habits when going back to college, and preparing oneself psychologically for reactions to weight change.
