Burundi Implicates Respected Journalist In Failed Coup
KIGALI, Rwanda (AP) — A prominent Burundian journalist says his government is seeking his extradition from Belgium over charges he played a role in a failed coup attempt against the government.
Antoine Kaburahe, director of independent newspaper Iwacu, said in a statement Wednesday that Burundi's government alleges he conspired with the military generals who plotted a failed coup in May during violent protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's efforts to get a third term. His lawyer, Ramberi Nsabimana told AP Wednesday that Burundian justice officials questioned Kaburahe on November 16 —before he traveled to Belgium — over why he had had phone conversations with the coup plotters. Carina Tertsakian, who researches Burundi for Human Rights Watch, said Kaburahe is a respected journalist and the allegations against him are "absurd."
