'Deadpool' Assassinates Competition To Become Global R-Rated Box-Office Champ

This next round is on Ryan Reynolds

"Deadpool" has nabbed the top spot at the global box office, making more money than any other R-rated movie, according to Variety. The surprise Marvel hit unseated "Matrix Reloaded" by raking in $746 million globally since its February release.

But the Merc with a Mouth still has a ways to go domestically. “The Passion of the Christ" currently holds the honor of being the highest-grossing R-rated film at the domestic box office, trumping the $349.9 million "Deadpool" earned in North America with a record-holding $370.8 million.

"American Sniper" now stands as the second most successful R-rated film in the U.S., but many expect "Deadpool" to overtake Clint Eastwood's war biopic soon, as roughly $127,000 separates the two films as of Wednesday.

Considering that the superhero flick required $58 million to produce, a significantly smaller budget than most of Marvel's projects these days, this massive haul only means good things for Reynolds' career and the future of the franchise.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, a sequel is already in the works with "Deadpool" scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick reportedly penning the next installment of the assassin's sure to be expletive-filled adventure.
