Default Why is TeLuS demanding sensitive personal information

Just got off the phone with Telus. Waited an hour on hold then wanted to set up an internet account. The agent told me I needed to provide 2 pieces of highly sensitive information (SIN, Passport, DL#) in order to receive service.

I declined and asked why he was asking for this. His story changed from security to credit check to verification back to security. I asked to speak with someone higher since I was not going to provide any of that but was seeking an alternative (security questions, etc.) he told me no manager would be available today.

Seems like this type of behaviour is not just poor service, this is illegal under PIPEDA legislation.

Telus, I would like some answers! No other business I deal with demands info like this. Why do you need it?
