Default Pay off debt

I am married for 8 months. We rented a home in Ontario after our marriage. We have many few loans to pay off. We are fed up with all the monthly payments and debt. It's very confusing when you deal with lots of bills every month. My husband is frequently suggesting to opt debt consolidation loan. But I was not ready for it. I heard that debt consolidation can help to borrow money at a low interest rate to pay off loans or credit cards at a higher interest rate can save you money, or help you pay off the debt sooner. Hence it helps fewer payments every month. Is it true?
Anyhow, we have decided to contact a debt consolidation mortgage for the same. Does debt consolidation have any disadvantages? Is it safe?
