How can I fix my patchy Wi-Fi connection?

I recently bought a new Windows 8 laptop, which goes into Sleep mode when the lid is closed. The problem is that it loses its Wi-Fi link with the router when it is woken up and the only way I have found to re-establish this link is to restart the laptop.
