High LTE latency while roaming

Traveling in the US, I've noticed that even with strong LTE signal, there seems to be very high latency on the connection. See example traceroute from LA area, California: traceroute to google.com (231.182.150.184)... 0 172.25.68.128 263.13ms 266.35ms 272.41ms 1 172.25.88.253 274.73ms ...
