Default Buck-Naked Woman Rescued 3 Miles Off California Coast

A 28-year-old naked woman was rescued Sunday three miles off the Southern California coast, according to the Orange County Register.

How she got there was still unclear.

The woman, who officials did not publicly identify, told authorities she was swept out to sea by a rip current after entering the water around 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. She was found three miles offshore and three miles down the coast from 19th Street in Newport Beach, where she said she entered the water.

A Newport Beach lifeguard told the Los Angeles Times that a rip current could only take her 500 to 600 feet offshore, at the most.

The woman was initially found by a pair of kayakers, who heard her screaming for help, the Register reported. The kayakers pulled her out of the water and called the Orange County Sheriff’s Harbor Patrol.

As for being naked, the woman told authorities she removed her swimsuit to ensure that it did not restrict her movements as she swam.

Harbor Patrol Sgt. D.J. Haldeman told the Daily Pilot that the rescue crew had expected to treat the woman for hypothermia, but she seemed fine when they arrived on the scene.

According to Jennifer Manzella, Newport Beach police and fire spokeswoman, nobody -- including lifeguards -- saw the woman enter the water, nor did they find belongings the woman said she left on the beach.

Harbor Patrol officials say they continue investigating how the woman got so far from shore.

The woman was taken to Hoag Hospital to be treated for dehydration.
