Default Family of Samuel DuBose Reach Settlement Of $5.3M

The family of Samuel DuBose, a 43-year-old black man who was shot and killed by a University of Cincinnati (UC) police officer on July 19, reached a $5.3 million settlement with the school on Monday.

DuBose's family will receive $4.85 million plus free undergraduate tuition for DuBose's 12 children, as well as a memorial commemorating him at the university, according to the Associated Press. The value of tuition costs and fees is valued at about $500,000 which brings the total monetary value of the settlement amount to roughly $5.3 million.

His family has also been invited to participate in a community advisory committee at the university to gather community input on police reform efforts of the University of Cincinnati Police Department.

Former UC police officer Ray Tensing shot and killed DuBose, who was unarmed, in his car on July 19. He allegedly stopped DuBose for not having a front license plate.

Tensing, who is white, was indicted on murder charges. At his arraignment on July 30, he pleaded not guilty and was released from jail after he paid 10 percent of his $1 million bond later that evening.

The release of the body cam footage of the fatal July shooting of DuBose further sparked public outrage over DuBose's death.

Another pretrial hearing for Tensing is scheduled for Feb. 11.
