Default Tattooed Sex Offender On Meth Arrested After 4-Hour Standoff: Cops

The tears tattooed on Matthew Joseph Medlin's face only suggest that he knew this day was coming.

The 32-year-old was arrested Saturday after a four-hour standoff with Portland police, during which authorities say the tattooed offender shot up meth and used rocks and metal scraps as weapons, according to the bureau's website.

A cat-and-mouse battle began after police received a 1 p.m. report of a man allegedly seen climbing atop train cars at a rail yard.

Police say they tried making contact with him, and he allegedly jumped inside of an open rail car, refusing to come out and grabbing objects around him to use as weapons.

Through the course of the standoff, police say they learned that Medlin was under the influence of methamphetamine and had been awake for more than 26 hours before entering the rail yard.

During his interaction with officers, they say he injected himself with more meth and began “acting even more erratically.”

Officers say they withstood a hail and thunderstorm of debris and eventually used a Taser to subdue him. He was taken to an area hospital for treatment and booked into the Multnomah County Jail on numerous charges.

Those charges include two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of second-degree criminal trespass, interfering with a peace officer, and disorderly conduct. He is also being held on an unrelated parole violation.

Medlin’s interaction with police isn’t necessarily his most shocking, however.

In 2014, he was the subject of a 12-hour manhunt after escaping a prison by scaling a fence -- just six days before he was due for release, local station KOIN reports. He had been serving time for burglary, sex abuse and assault.
