Default Mesmerizing Time-Lapse Video Shows How Lightning Looks From Space

Lightning strikes seen from space are as breathtaking as you'd imagine.

British astronaut Tim Peake on Tuesday tweeted mesmerizing time-lapse footage of an electrical storm as seen from the International Space Station.

It was taken as the craft soared from the direction of North Africa, over Turkey and toward Russia:

Amazing how much lightning can strike our planet in a short time #Principia #timelapsehttps://t.co/XijV5E1pI0

"Amazing how much lightning can strike our planet in a short time," he wrote.

Peake became the first person officially representing Britain to board the ISS in December when he embarked on a six-month mission for the European Space Agency.

On Sunday, he tweeted out this time-lapse video of the ISS flying over Italy and the Alps:

American astronaut Reid Wiseman also beamed back a time-lapse video of lightning in August 2014, though Peake's footage does seem clearer.

And in 2013, NASA released these still images of lightning striking Kuwait and Saudi Arabia.
