Default This Artist Is Using 3D Printers To Revive Artifacts Destroyed by ISIS

Since 2014, the self-described Islamic State has been engaged in a systematic campaign of cultural cleansing around Syria and the Levant. As a result, invaluable pieces of the region's religious and architectural heritage -- including some 28 historical sites -- have been destroyed, seemingly forever.

But now, Morehshin Allahyari, an Iranian-American artist, is breathing new life into the ruins of these antiques by 3D-printing sculptures lost to ISIS. Her work involves the reconstruction of selected original artifacts, and was produced after over a year of extensive research. They were originally exhibited at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice alongside other artists whose works explored the destruction of art at various historical moments.

Watch the video above to learn more about Allahyari's charge to help preserve lost art in perpetuity.
