Duplicate emails using IMAP on my BB with Bell

Searched high and dry for the answer: I get an email to my mail program (osx Mail or gmail) and I get a duplicate on my handset. Read the email in my email program, and it's still unread on my handset, blinking red light and all. So much for imap. Suggestions? Help?? Driving me batty. ...
