Default #TalkToMe: Connecting with Parents in the Digital Age

For a college student, I am weirdly close to my parents. We have a group-text that gets more attention than Donald Trump's twitter, and we Facetime at least twice a week. Everyday we check in with each other. The conversations range from hour-long phone calls to simple emoji-filled messages, but we always keep an open line of communication. Some people, especially guys, get a little uncomfortable with our tight-knit relationship... turns out talking about all of the things you and your dad have in common isn't ideal talk for a first date.

Regardless, I love having parents that are still highly involved in my day-to-day life. Most people my age do not share the same level of honesty with their moms and dads, but I think it's important to have a strong support system. After hearing about the "Talk to Me" series on HuffPost, I realized that while I talk to my parents often, we don't always acknowledge the long-term importance of our family's structure. The buzz of everyday life tends to distract us from considering the meaning and intentions behind the texts we send, the emails we receive and the Instagram posts that were tagged in. (My mom's favorite account is @thefatJewish and my dad isn't allowed to go near Instagram because he still tries to zoom in on pictures via the dreaded "double tap") The interview gave me the opportunity to understand why it is that my family is so close, and, more importantly, gave my dad the chance to be a ham in front of the camera.
