HuffPost's new parent-child interview series
Talk To Me examines the close and often complex relationships between parents and their kids, and encourages sons and daughters around the world to
make time to interview their parents.
In a new video for the series, YouTube CEO Susan Wojcicki asked her mother, Esther, how she raised three successful daughters. Esther, a hardworking woman in her own right, said she empowered her daughters -- two of whom are CEOs of tech companies and another who is an epidemiologist -- with a sense of independence.
"I gave you a ton of freedom" from a young age, Esther said, noting that many parents worry their children won't succeed if they don't control what's going on. (Esther did recall some of the downsides of that policy, like the hot-pink shag carpet that Susan picked out for her room as a little girl.)
Esther also shared the acronym that encapsulates her parenting philosophy: TRICK, which stands for trust, respect, independence, collaboration, and kindness.
Susan goes on to ask her mom about working her way out of an impoverished upbringing and how she learned to manage sensitivities about her body image. Watch it all in the video above.
