iPhone 5 $50/$100 Credit Activation question?

I have a question about how long my phone needs to be activated on my account? The message I received says "The credit will appear...after you receive & activate your iPhone 5". Can I have it activated for 1 day and I will receive the credit OR does the phone have to activated at the time...
