Music selection when plugged in?

I can stream BT audio or plug it direct USB in my car. When it's not plugged in at all I can scroll through my music on the phone easily, but as soon as I plug it in, whether it's just to charge or to play through USB, I can't see any music on my phone, it has to be done through the radio screen or...
